and a new stadium in Belmont!
On Thursday, the New York Cosmos released the winning goal in their “Goal of the Year” contest. Very few fans will likely be willing to argue against the selected goal of the year. Mads Stokkelien’s gem of a goal against the New York Red Bulls was voted by the fans as the goal of the year. The goal was the first of three that the Cosmos would score during that match which of course resulted in a 3-0 dominance of the Major League Soccer side.
For the Cosmos, that was their second win of the US Open Cup followinh up a victory over the Brooklyn Italians. The victory spring the Cosmos into the 5th round of the Open Cup and pitted them against the Philadelphia Union. Cosmos fans know all too well how this match ended. Multiple occurrences of questionable refereeing led to Philadelphia winning the match 2-1 in overtime. The crushing defeat unfortunately ended the Cosmos short US Open Cup run.
In 2015, this Cosmos fan wold love to see the Cosmos not only give their fans those same two cup wins but FOUR MORE WINS in addition to those two wins. Had the Cosmos beaten the Union on that day and went on to win three more matches, they would have been crowned US Open Cup champions. Winning the US Open Cup has been something that has been on the radar of head coach Giovanni Savarese since the beginning of 2014. In 2015, assuming the same format of play, six total wins would give the Cosmos the Open Cup and would send Cosmos fans into one hell of a euphoric celebration!
