The Five Points Are Filling The Void The Cosmos Created On The Field
By Cesar Trelles – 12/17/14
(with contributions by Aquiles Rodriguez)
Yes it is December and the cold weather has set in. Several of the New York Cosmos players have deserted New York for warmer climes and to be with family and friends. For the most part, except for watching on TV, there is really no soccer in New York. Unless you are part of the Five Points.
Earlier in 2014 the Five Points formed the first ever competitive soccer team made up of New York Cosmos supporters group members. Their first competitive action saw them appear in the NYC Supporters Cup in Times Square. Being new to organized soccer, the Five Points took their lumps and unfortunately did not make it to the playoffs in that tournament.
The Five Points vowed to come back stronger for next year’s Supporters Cup and started working towards that goal by participating in a league starting earlier this fall.
Enter the NY Soccer Project. The NY Soccer Project is part of the World Soccer Project (WSP) and is a soccer association with two related purposes: to provide an exceptional soccer service (in the form of adult recreational soccer leagues), and to use funds generated from that service to promote local and international causes for under-served children.
The Five Points FC is currently led by Aquiles Rodriguez from La Banda Del Cosmos SG and Steven Baquerizo from the Borough Boys SG. They have formed a formidable team that currently consists of the following along with the key attributes that each brings to the team.
Aquiles Rodriguez (goalkeeper)
Aquiles has had many important saves this season to keep the scores tight.
Jesse Bania (midfielder)
Has consistently been a monster in the midfield and on the defensive end.
Lauren Grant (defender)
Has brought great control and marking skill on the defensive end and has sparked the team with her runs up and down the flank.
Harold Padillla (midfielder)
Has maintained steady control of the game from the midfield up and sets the tempo for the forwards of the team.
Rafa Castano- (forward)
Provides the team with awesome shots and always remains on his toes. Consistently keeps rival defenses awake with his speed.
Dave D’amico- (forward)
Along with Castano, are the top scorers on the team. Displays a strong foot and knows how to place the ball away from rival goalkeepers.
Jessica Quizhpe- (defender)
Strong tough defender who can play left or right. Don’t let her size fool you, she is as tough as they come.
Lance Nation (defender)
Quite simply a beast. Starts as defense and pretty much controls the game with his passes and ball skills. Runs the entire field.
Steven Baquerizo (forward)
Just completed his first game back after a long injury and returns to score a goal. (sound familiar, Martin Palermo of boca juniors scored a goal against archival riber plate in 2000 after 7 months away due to torn ligaments)
Melissa Fornabaio- (defender)
Currently on injuried reserve due to a broken wrist suffered 2 weeks ago. Get better soon!
The 5 Points FC is currently growing and improving steadily with each week that goes by. By participating the the NY Soccer Project the team has now participated in three official tournaments. Just like any other, team players come and go but the team tries to field the best team possible to represent the “5 Points” to the best of their ability.
The team owes special thanks to the New York Cosmos for supplying them with jerseys and also paving the way for the team to join these tournaments.
You can come out and support the 5 Points FC when they play their next match on Sunday January 4th. Details of the match are below! Members of the 5 Points Supporters group will be on hand leading cheers just as they would during a Cosmos match. A great way to practice the supporters groups chants during the off season!
