Minnesota has Miguel Ibarra and the New York Cosmos have Andres Flores. In the same manner that Miguel Ibarra was called up to the Unites States Mens National team for this week’s round of friendlies, Andres Flores was called up to play with the El Salvador National Team for their friendly match tonight against Colombia. Earlier this season, Flores was called back to the Salvadorean national side when they participated in the Copa Centroamericana.

Flores getting called up for his national team is another boost for the North American Soccer League as they continue to make their mark in US Soccer. Just yesterday United States Mens National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsman was quoted as saying the following:

“I’m a deep believer in promotion-relegation systems. It’s not up to me saying there should be MLS, and there should be second division (that) is NASL, and there should be promotion-relegation.”

Klinsman went on to make many positive comments that supported a promotion/relegation system in United States soccer. While this is not something that can happen overnight, it echoes sentiments that many advocates of the NASL have sought after since the pool of talent has improved in the NASL since its return in 2011.

“Soccer is growing in the United States. The way it is structured, you cannot categorize one (league) as a first or second division” commented Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese after the team’s practice on Friday. “This league is growing, we will see some good teams that are coming out. I really believe that its becoming a lot more competitive . When a coach like Klinsman, is looking everywhere to find players, it shows you that all the leagues are doing a good job in trying to develop players.”

One player who has seen the difference first hand in 2014, is New York Cosmos defender Connor Lade. As he has bounced back and forth between The NY/NJ Red Bulls and the Cosmos this season, he weighed in on what he has seen so far in the NASL.

“It’s a high level, there’s a lot of guys that have played in MLS and have played internationally at the highest levels.” commented Lade after his workout with the Cosmos on Friday. “Being with the Cosmos in the NASL has been great because they are a great group of professionals and I have been impressed with the level of play”

With Andres Flores being with the Salvadorean team on Friday, he will be unavailable for the Cosmos during their match on Saturday. Head Coach Savarese expects Flores to be back with the team after Wednesday.

We wish Andres Flores lots of success on his match against Colombia on Friday.
