The New York Cosmos recently accepted the ALS ice bucket challenge. During a practice held last week, the entire Cosmos team participated in the ice bucket challenge and literally “chilled out together” after a workout. The challenge has lit social media on fire, raising both money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. About 30,000 Americans now have the disease, which attacks nerve cells and ultimately leads to total paralysis, though the mind remains sharp. Life expectancy is typically two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
Part of accepting the challenge is not only executing it but also nominating three others to take the challenge. Coach Gio Savarese nominated Minnesota United FC, The Cosmos Girls and none other than the Five Points to take the challenge.
The Five Points of course are the vociferous supporters groups of the New York Cosmos. Together, the Cross Island Crew, the Borough Boys and La Banda Del Cosmos make up the Five Points. Since the group is a large group and one that is spread out amongst the tri-state area, should they accept the challenge, it would likely be at a home match. Will they accept coach Savarese’s challenge? If they do- who might they nominate to further take the challenge? The Cosmos next home match is this Saturday August 23rd at 7:00pm come on out to see if the 5 points are up to the ALS challenge!
