NY Cosmos Supporters and coaches well represented in an important soccer day in New York City
By Steven Hamlin & Cesar Trelles – 8/4/14
The Street Soccer USA NYC Cup was a fantastic event for a fantastic cause. Street Soccer USA (SSUSA) uses team sports to help adults and youths (ages 15+) overcome homelessness. SSUSA continues to innovate and lead in the development of new solutions to poverty and homelessness through sports. On Sunday, the NYC cup was held to help raise funds to support the Street Soccer USA cause.
During the event the New York Cosmos were well represented in both the supporters division of the competition and the coaches division as well.
The “Five Points” team consisted of members from all three supporters groups: Cross Island Crew, La Banda Del Cosmos and the Borough Boys. The Five Points tried their hardest and had a fantastic time competing in the tournament however could not advance from the group stage. At the end of the day the Five Points were good sports and tried their hardest, and at the end of the day, thats all that matters.
“It was a fun and awesome experience. It’s alot harder then it looks. The playing surface is really tough but overall we did a great job in defending the Cosmos colors. Yeah we didn’t win a match but played our hearts out and the end, this united us as supporters even more.”, commented Five Points goal keeper Aquiles as he described his participation in the tournament.
After playing in their portion of the tournament, members of the Five Points remained on hand to show support (literally, with streamers) for the Cosmos coaching staff as they played in the coaches tournament. Their first opponent of the day would be the coaching staff of NYCFC.
“We had a fantastic time chanting for our boys in green and white against the boys in NYCFC shirts” an elated Steve Hamlin explained.
In the first ever battle between the Cosmos and NYCFC, the Cosmos coaches dominated NYCFC and won the match 9-1. Unfortunately after that match they would not be able to make it out of the group stage.
However regardless of on field results, the key take away on the day was how much attention from casual and hardcore fans was created by the Cosmos and in the middle of Times Square! The Five Points even chatted up a few fans and convinced a group of fans to purchase tickets for upcoming Cosmos matches.
“Today was a great showing of support for the club but an even better day for the 5 points. United on Every Front!”, proclaimed Eytan Calderon who played as part of the Five Points supporters team.
All in all, Street Soccer USA put on a wonderful event for a wonderful cause. Our teams may have not stole the show, but our support in the stands absolutely stole the event. Fantastic day was had all around!
