It’s was chilly for a late May evening with the mercury hovering around 55 and a stiff breeze blowing throughout the night. But in sections 14, 15 and 16 of St John’s Belson Stadium, the temperature was turned all the way up. The Five Points were at it again and all three Cosmos supporters groups were out in full force for the New York Cosmos first ever US Open Cup match. Thanks to two first half goals by Jimmy Ockford and Hagop Chirishian, the Cosmos eliminated the Brooklyn Italians from the US Open Cup and advanced to the fourth round of the tournament to face the NY/NJ Red Bulls. Call it what you want, The New York Derby, MLS vs NASL, or just a US Open cup match. This pairing has been on the minds of both fan bases and there is no question that Hofstra’s Schuart Stadium will be rocking come 8:30pm on Saturday June 14th.

Anticipation and hype will be generated over the next two weeks, however just for today, let’s relish in the accomplishment of getting through the first US Open Cup match. Coach Gio Savarese had always considered this first match as the toughest match that they will play all tournament. With this match now in his rear view mirror all eyes will be on him on the Cosmos come June 14th!

There was no video feed of last nights match so if you were not in attendance, here are some pictures to help you catch up with the sights from the Cosmos first ever US Open Cup match!

  1. Game On now. allowing their injured starters to rest was a luxury.
Cosmos need now to get on their horse and promote the NY Derby match up.
Anything less then a 10K plus to sellout at Hofstra would be disapointing
I Imagine that OneWorld will be braodcasting the game.
Not sure if the NYRB Broadcaster MSG would televise this match. If MSG does broadcast the match then it will be covered.
If not OneWorld and the Cosmos need to have the match broadcast over a NYC network. SNY did partner with One World and Cosmos for some simulcasts.
SNY TV schedule for 6/14/14 has the Mets on with a 1:00 start
4:00 does not have any live game programming of any kind has a trivia show and two hours of SNY Action sports shows.6:30 Jets Nation weekly show. 7:00 Post game Live show.
    8:00 broadway boxing.
From 4:30 start to an 8:00 start could be room for OneWorld to simulcast on SNY.
Or could hopefully find an over air network to braodcast Open game and possible second part of the NASL season

  2. With the NASL on their break ESPN3 could also be an option as the NASL game of the week.

  3. 8:30pm is perfect for the RBNY game. They must have known some of us wouldn’t want to miss that Italy-England game at 6:00. 😉

    • Hey Franco! Thank for the comment – We will likely have Prost as an option to watch the match – but we might even try and get Social to open for this match – for some reason they are closed on the weekends???
