A Look At The ‘Mos Vs The League

While I may take the time to put my thoughts in the form of a blog about Cosmos, I am in no way shape or form a writer. I am actually a numbers guy. To me sometimes slicing and dicing numbers, no matter what they, can reveal some very interesting things. As for my New York Cosmos, that is no different. Case in point, yesterday’s 4-0 annihilation of the Atlanta Silverbacks – or was it an anhiliation?

Yes Ayoze I said it, was this an anhiliation? If you look at the stat sheet Sunday match, Jimmy Mauer was put to the test often, to the tune of having to make 12 saves. One would think in looking at the score sheet that the Silverbacks offense was miserable. That it wasn’t. They took their shots and lots of them. 8 shots off target and 12 shots on target. For all of those that might have questioned the skill set of Jimmy Mauer, he passed his first test with flying colors making 12 saves. Which means what happened to the stellar Cosmos defense that anchored the 2013 NASL championship run? It clearly was not as easy as 4-0.

Now I know its week one, but an outsider looking in would look at the leading scorer of the NASL and say “hey that Carlos Mendes is a hot scorer huh?”. Sorry he’s a defender. Two goals for anyone in any match is an admirable defeat but for a defender who hasn’t scored in 10 years I would say that folks, you witnessed history on Sunday with Mendes’ two goals!

My next look at numbers is always something that intrigues me and that is attendance. My friends, I think we will be looking up at the Indy Eleven all season this year. These guys have done a tremendous job with selling tickets and their fan base is passionate. Its showing in week one. Here are their numbers as well as the numbers for all the home games in week 1.

Indy Eleven (visitors – Carolina Railhawks) Final Result: 1-1 Draw
Attendance – 11,048

New York Cosmos (visitors – Atlanta Silverbacks) Final Result: 4-0 Cosmos
Attendance – 7,906

San Antonio Scorpions (visitors Minnesota United) Final Result: 2-0 Minnesota United
Attendance – 7,381

Tampa Bay (visitors FC edmonton) Final Result: 1-1 Draw
Attendance – 7,003

Ft. Lauderdale Strikers (visitors Ottawa Fury) Final Result 2-0 Strikers
Attendance – 3,105

Here are some other numbers that made me go huh?

Ottawa Fury – how the heck do you possess the ball for 64 percent of the match and get shutout by the Ft Lauderdale Strikers?

20 seconds – that’s the amount of time that Jemal Johnson of the NY Cosmos waited to fire off his 1st shot in his 1st home appearance ever for the NY Cosmos. That a boy Jemal – making the time count!

Oh and in case you wanted to know – there were 11 goals in week one around the NASL to go along with 25 yellow cards and one lone red card . Thank you Julius James for being that guy!

The season is back Cosmos fans – 2014 is going to be loads of fun!
