For fans of the New York Cosmos, the name Alessandro Noselli usually brings a smile to their faces. Its very easy to remember his several goals in the fall 2013 season especially his first as a member of the Cosmos. That memorable first goal came in injury time of the second half to beat the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in their first official match in 30 years. His next two goals would come late in the game as well. While these goals didn’t win any matches, they served as prime examples of why Giovanni Savarese molded Noselli into a late substitute in 2013. After an injury caused Noselli to miss some matches early in the season, he would return to the lineup as a substitute off of the Cosmos bench. On October 12th against the Carolina Railhawks, he would score his second goal of the year as part of a 4-0 thrashing of the Railhawks at Schuart Stadium. The following week, he would score again also as a substitute against FC Edmonton in the 78th. This goal almost served as the Fall Season Championship clincher if it wasn’t for a heartbreaking late goal by FC Edmonton in injury time that caused the game to end in a tie.

While Noselli was content with coming off of the bench for coach Gio Savarese, there is no question that he would rather be in the starting eleven for the club. He commented on his role as a substitute:

“The team played good, I came in during the second half and I would score. I want to play in the first eleven but last year the combination was perfect and maybe if we would have changed it maybe it wouldn’t be good for us. But at the end it was good because we won, I scored but I hope this year I play in the first eleven. But I don’t know what’s going to happen, I might not play in the first eleven and that’s fine.”

While Noselli accepted his role as a substitute in 2013, nothing will ever take away his moment during the Cosmos season opener. Noselli uses words as a “Dream” and “Lucky” when he describes the goal. Further, he has allowed himself to relish in the fact that he will forever be linked to Cosmos history as the player that scored the winning goal in their return to soccer action after 30 years of dormancy. What makes the moment for him even more special is that just days before the home opener in which he would make history, he almost never made it to the game. Noselli told me a short story about having to fly back to Florence, Italy just days before the match to renew his visa which had expired. Luck would have it that he returned just in time for that match, literally the day before the home opener. Faith however would have it that he was in the right position in injury time of the second half to net the winning goal back on 8/3/2013.

Hear Alessandro Noselli talk about his decision to leave Italy to play for the Cosmos, his role as a substitute For Gio Savarese in 2013 and of course, his historic goal below when he and I had a chance to chat recently:
