Cosmos Country we are sitting on less than one week away from the start of the 2014 season. So much has happened since the New York Cosmos last played a competitive match that counted for something. Since that magical night back on November 9th so much has happened when you take a minute to look at things. The team took a historic trip to Spain to play a testimonial match for Marcos Senna against Villareal. Gio Savarese was named Head of Soccer Operations. Emirates Air signed an extension to their sponsorship. Hans Denissen, Mads Stokkelien, Jimmy Ockford and Kyle Zobeck all were added to the team. And finally of course, the team traveled for pre-season to Dubai.
But now the real matter is at hand, that being the 2014 NASL season opener. This season will mean so much for the team. Other teams are hoping for a New York Cosmos “sophomore slump” but some how I do not think that is an option for fans of the Cosmos. The team has expectations of not just being competitive in the NSAL but in the US Open cup as well. While it might be cliche to say this, part of what will help the team and the organization as a whole is absolutely the fans.
In 2013 the supporters of the NY Cosmos came to Schuart Stadium and cheered for their team. They gave 90 minutes of cheer week after week and were rewarded with the ultimate prize – the 2013 NASL Championship. The support was exceptional in 2013. In 2014 however the expectation is that we will be stronger and louder. I say that, not as each supporter group individually, but collectively as the Five Points.
I hope that when I look back on the 2014 season later this December that I see that the 5 points gave the team 150% of their support and cheer yet again. Personally, I never envisioned me being a supporter. But today as part of the Cross Island Crew and being very close to both the Borough Boys and La Banda Del Cosmos I think that the Five Points is a beautiful place to grow roots in and cheer for a team.
Its because of this point that I think that the Five Points should aim to come out stronger and more united this year than ever. Sure we all have our own individual view of soccer in general and how we feel about it based on our background and the other teams we might support. But let us not forget that we all, for our own individual reasons, have decided to support the New York Cosmos and it is that one common bond that unites that Five Points. Whether you are from another country, the Five Boroughs or Long Island – we all share that common bond – we love the NY Cosmos! And we can all be proud of what we accomplished at Schuart Stadium last year, especially the mark we left at Atlanta! But what matters rather significantly is that the players actually feel the love from us. Every time they hear us or see our spirit in the 5 points – believe me they are hearing us.
I was fortunate enough to attend that most recent media day that was held by the team and was able to interview several players. I asked the players several different questions but there was one question that I felt worth repeating to several players. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FANS? If you didn’t believe me above that the the players do feel the support that the Five Points collectively provides, then let the players convince you.
Here are small portions of my interviews with the players and their comments when asked about the Five Points during 2013 as told to me during Media Day on Friday 4/4/14.

The players need the support. Our strength is in numbers and we are at our greatest when we all come together. Let’s do our best to stay united and focused and continue to grow the Five Points. Remember, there is one common bond above all else – Cosmos Country!
