On Friday March 27th, spring started to take on more meaning for fans of the New York Cosmos. Not since the Soccer Bowl In Atlanta, had the Five points had a chance to come together as they did Friday night. The occasion was simple – A Preseason Party With the Five Points thrown by the NY Cosmos at Studio Square Beer Garden in Long Island City. There was really no other agenda for the night. There were no presentations, no awards, no games to watch, not even any raffles. Just a chance for The Borough Boys, La Banda Del Cosmos, and of course The Cross Island Crew, to hang out one more time to cheer on their team as they had all of 2013. Members of all three supporters groups were present Friday night and pretty much picked up right where they left off in 2013. Friday gave the fans an opportunity to meet some of the new players on the team such as Hans Denissen, Mads Stokkelien and Jimmy Ockford. Also present were fan favorites from last year Sebastian Guenzatti and David Diosa. Assistant coach Carlos Llamosa was also in attendance Friday night.
The Cosmos were very generous and provided free food to all of their fans as well as two free drinks at the bar to liven the spirits of their winter stricken fans. In attendance on this evening was also a camera crew from ONE World Sports who came to the party to capture the spirit and passion of the 5 points. Barry Fitzsimmons, creative director of ONE World Sports chatted with this Cosmos Soccer Fan and had this to say about being art the party:
“We wanted to capture the flavor of the event and get some interviews with as many of the fans that want to share stories of how they became Cosmos fans, memories of 2013 season and hopes for 2014.
We’d also wanted to gather groups to do chants and songs. Basically, we want to bring the party to our viewers in all its madness and glory!”
And that they did. Members of each of the three supporters groups had their chance to speak on camera for ONE World sports as did this Cosmos fan. One of my favorite parts of the night was meeting Roby Young, a former player for the Cosmos back in 1972 and 1973. Roby was ecstatic to be in attendance and said he thoroughly enjoyed seeing the enthusiasm that the Five Points were bringing to the Cosmos. He talked to me about his hopes of reuniting with some of his teammates from the early seventies and maybe making some appearances at 2014 matches. If you would like to read more about Roby Young you can read this terrific article by Cosmos team historian David Kilpatrick on Mr. Young here.
The night also was the debut for the Cosmos Fan Van which was parked outside of the Studio. A new feature for the team in 2014 will serve as a mobile traveling advertisement for the team. It will also make appearances around NY and will set up shop to sell Cosmos merchandise. Be on the look out of the fan van in 2014! On this night fans were excited just to pose for pictures with the fan van.
To be honest, fans were just excited for anything that had the word “Cosmos” on it. This winter was indeed a long one and the Cosmos were busy strengthening their team for the 2014 season. What better way to get over the long winter than to meet those new players that were added to the team, celebrate the hardware won in 2013 and get excited over the possibilities in 2014!
Two weeks til opening day – for now I will leave you with some sites from Friday night!
