The New York Cosmos travelled the globe back in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Name the city and they were likely there during those years. However back then, Dubai was a city that lacked the luster that it boasts today and the team never made it out to the Mid East to visit the city. On Tuesday morning, the NY Cosmos team set foot in the City Of Gold for the first time in their history. Sure team reps have made the trip out to the mideast as evidenced by their sponsorship deal with Emirates Air but this marks the first time that the team has travelled together and will compete in the city.
On Tuesday the team got adjusted not only to the jet lag but to life in Dubai. Thanks to the magic of social media, we got an opportunity to see some of the happenings that were going on in Cosmos Country straight from the team and the players themselves. The team held a practice at the UAE National Training Facility to shake some of the airplane cobwebs off.
Shortly after their work out, the team would announce on their site, the details on their first exhibition match while in Dubai. The Cosmos will play UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al Shabab Al Arabi on Thursday morning 8:30 am EST. As of right now there is no indication that the match will be broadcast or even streamed on the web, but the team has launched an official team twitter account that will be following and tweeting updates of the match. Make sure to follow them on twitter – @nycosmos_match .
The team is expected to be in Dubai for two weeks where they are scheduled to play other exhibition matches as well. In the interim, it’s been fun looking at the different pictures that the team and the players have been posting on various social media websites. The one conclusion I have made so far on their trip is that it pays to have Emirates Air as one of your team’s sponsors!
