My first weekend of New York Cosmos withdrawl came and went without a hitch. I didn’t hurt anyone nor did I break out into spasms or anything. The only thing to come out of it was some reflecting and some appreciation for the season that was. With that said I drew up a list of the top 10 moments that the NY Cosmos gave us this season. There were so many highlights and very few low moments. I can honestly say that as a fan, we could not have asked for a better season than the one we had. While I have a lot of optimism for 2014, its going to be hard to top the season that we had. But I’m excited a the simple thought of the team taking the field for the 2014 season!
So without further ado, here are my top 10 moments from the 2013 New York Cosmos Fall Season:
10- THE RE-EMERGENCE OF COSMOS COUNTRY!
It goes without saying that the 2013 New York Cosmos were a dominant force in the NASL. However much has been said about the 12th man on the field on many occassions. The 12th man was the fan base or Cosmos Country as we would like to call it. From cheering at Hofstra to attending viewing parties and ultimately, to travelling to Atlanta, I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this fan base and to me, its one of the finer points from this past season!
9.DIOMAR DIAZ SCORES TWO GOALS AGAINST THE FT. LAUDERDALE STRIKERS ALSO GIVING THE COSMOS THEIR FIRST ROAD VICTORY OF THE SEASON! (9/21)
Thru the first seven weeks of the season, the NY Cosmos had accumulated 3 wins, 3 ties and a loss and were still longing for first place. What they had not accomplished up until that date was a road win. They knew that if they were going to challenge for first place that they would have to find a way to win on the road. On September 21 against Fort Lauderdale, Diomar Diaz would solve this riddle when he came through with his best performance of the year, scoring two goals, one in the 10th minute and another in the 33rd minute which was enough to give the Cosmos their first road victory of the season – a 2-0 win over the Strikers. Not only was this the first time the Cosmos won on the road but it was the first time all year that the Cosmos were aggressive in scoring goals early in the match.
8.GUENZATTI’S LATE GOAL GIVES THE COSMOS A 1-0 VICTORY OVER MINNESOTA UNITED! (9/14)
With the Cosmos trying to right their ship and move up in the standings, a win at home against Minnesota was a must. Both of the teams would play a tough and tightly contested first half and end up scoreless at half time. The second half seemed as it was going the same way but late in the second half, Hunter Freeman would find Sebastian Guenzatti on a nice cross from the right corner and Guenzatti would head the ball into the net in the 77th minute to give the Cosmos a 1-0 lead. That goal would prove to be the only goal that the Cosmos would need and would give them another home victory as well!
7.THE SIGNING OF GIOVANNI SAVARESE TO A MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION!
So this moment didn’t have to do with a goal or anything else on the field but rather business off of the field. On October 22nd , just as it was starting to become clear that the Cosmos not only managed to reboot but excel in the reboot era, the team signed head coach Giovanni Savarese to a multi-year contract extension. Coach Gio had already been doing a great job and what better way to start focusing on the future than to solidify the genius that had already help to shape the current team on the field. The move was praised by many as it was evident the Gio had been one of the main forces behind that Cosmos success.
6. PERI MAROSEVIC’S GOAL AGAINST THE FT. LAUDERDALE STRIKERS – THE FIRST OF THE REBOOT ERA! (8/3)
The day had already yielded great memories. The sight of Pele and other Cosmos legends on the field at Schuart stadium whipped the crowd into nostalgic frenzy. Now the crowd needed some current day frenzy. The boys in green were on the field and all that was needed was a goal. Cue up Peri Marosevic. In the 44th minute Marosevic would connect on the first goal of the Cosmos reboot era and put them up 1-0 against their arch rival Ft. Lauderdale Strikers. Close to 12,000 fans would go crazy ad the Cosmos were back and on the board!
5. HENRY LOPEZ’ GOAL IN INJURY TIME TO DEFEAT THE SAN ANTONIO SCORPIONS! (8/24)
Coming Off Of A Loss and a Tie on the road, the NY Cosmos were in desperate need of a win and what better place to get it then at home. The San Antonio Scorpions were also in desperate need of a win as they were winless coming into Schuart Stadium. The Cosmos would get off to a good start on a Diomar Diaz goal in the 42nd minute, eerily reminiscent of Peri Marosevic’s goal during their first home victory. San Antonio would tie the match in the 64th minute and they would remain tied going into injury time. Once again, just like in their one opener, the “Cardiac Cosmos” would come up with some late magic. In the 92nd minute, Henry Lopez would nail a header into the net on a series of passes from Satoru Kashiwase and then Marcos Senna to set up Lopez. The goal would give the Cosmos a 2-1 lead and with less than a minute to go would also give them their second victory of the season.
4. THE NY COSMOS DEFEAT THE TAMPA BAY ROWDIES 4-3 IN A GREAT COME BACK! (9/29)
Another one of their long time rivals, the Tampa Bay Rowdies would march into Hofstra’s Schuart Stadium on September 29th. As much as the Rowdies are hated, nothing is hated even more than when they score. On this day, the Rowdies would score THREE times in the first half to take a 3-1 lead into half time. With the table now set, the Cosmos were ready to embark on one hell of a come back. First Paulo Mendes would put a goal in to make the score 3-2. Diomar Diaz would break through two Rowdies defenders to tie the game. Finally the man himself Marcos Senna would send give the Cosmos fans exactly what they had longed for at half time – a come from behind victory against the Rowdies. Senna hooked a free kick from right to left past the Rowdies goalie to make it a 4-3 match! Here is video of the Cosmos goals that day!
3. ALESSANDRO NOSELLI’S HEADER AGAINST THE STRIKERS TO GIVE THE COSMOS THEIR FIRST VICTORY! (8/3)
Everything had gone picture perfect on opening day. As previously mentioned, legends had taken the field, the Cosmos jersey was gracing the field of a soccer pitch once again, but here we were in the injury time and the score was dead locked at one a piece. You knew that the first match of this reboot era was not going to finish in a tie right? Of course not. Alessandro Noselli would cap the perfect return of the Cosmos with a header in the 91st minute to give the Cosmos a 2-1 victory and their first victory in 30 years! A moment to truly never forget!
2. THE NEW YORK COSMOS CLINCH THE FALL 2013 SEASON TITLE WITH A 2-1 VICTORY OVER SAN ANTONIO! (10/27)
Just one week earlier the Cosmos took to the field on their home turf against FC Edmonton in hopes of clinching the fall season in front of their fans. All was looking bright for the Cosmos as they held a 1-0 until the 90th minute when Edmonton would spoil the party and force a draw. Now on the road, the Cosmos would try once again to seal the deal. They would get off to a rough start early in the match – the 3rd minute of the match! The Scorpions would go up 1-0 and maintain the lead into half time. However in the second half it was time to put the nail on the coffin for all of the fall 2013 participants. First Marcos Senna struck with a goal on an assist from Sebastian Guenzatti in the 52nd minute. Then just minutes later, the 54th to be exact, Stefan Dimitrov would connect on a pass from Diomar Diaz to give the Cosmos a 2-1 lead. The remainder of the match was a grudge match for Cosmos the remainder of the way. They would lose Marcos Senna to an ankle injury and then have his replacement, Dane Murphy, received a red card in the 74th minute, forcing the Cosmos to play the remainder of that match with only 10 players. The Cardiac Cosmos would live up to their name and hold off the Scorpions to win the match 2-1 and sent Cosmos Country into a frenzy and send the club to the 2013 Soccer Bowl!
1. THE NY COSMOS WIN THEIR 6TH NASL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A 1-0 WIN OVER THE ATLANTA SILVERBACKS! (11/9)
In what was by far the biggest rush for this sports fan in a very long time, my #1 thrill this season was easily the win against the Atlanta Silverbacks and the NY Cosmos capturing their 6th NASL title. The emotion in the Stadium all around was such an intense feeling that had not been felt all year. The Marcos Senna goal in the 2nd half was a thing of beauty to watch and to celebrate. And of course, once the whistle blew after 95 minutes, sheer ecstasy and jubilation was exerted by every Cosmos Country member around the world! The perfect culmination in what was already a historic season! The 2013 season would end with a championship. What can 2014 possibly bring? To me, its too early to think about that right now. Lets enjoy the 2013 celebration one more time!
